For your 4th and final blog you will be reviewing studies of public preK done at the state or local level. Two of the studies look at the effectiveness of programs for different groups of children or using different program models. The final one examines what principals know about preK programs. If you were charged with helping your local school district prepare their new public preK program how might they use the information from these three studies? What suggestions might you make to them, with the findings from these three studies in mind?

Hi ECH 500 Students! I am sorry for the delay in posting this prompt. As a result I am extending the time to reply to this third prompt unit June 7th. Here's your question: The studies by Lynch (2010) and Chien et al. (2010) examine public preK using different perspectives. Lynch examines its cost effectiveness while Chien et al. look at the effectiveness of different curricular approaches. While both articles can be a bit more challenging to read, what do you see as one or two important findings of their work? What did you learn about public preK that you had not considered before? How can the state of Maine use these insights as expansion of public preK moves forward?

For your second blog post I'd like you to consider the work of Armour and Sousa (2014), Schweinhart (2010), and Zigler (2010). The articles consider what we know about the Perry Preschool Project, Head Start and other modern ECD/preschool programs. The articles discuss important issues regarding (1) program funding, (2) goals, (3) staffing, (4) curriculum, (5) quality, (6) service intensity, (7) program targeting/participant characteristics, (8) program components, and (9) strategies used to examine the effective of initiatives. If a move toward universal or pubic preK is to be effective, we need to consider what programs should look like and make decisions informed by the existing research base. For this blog prompt consider what you have learned about the issues listed above and what a model public or universal preK program would look like and why.
